Financial Philosophy
The Liberal Arts education by definition has historically been designed to give students the freedom to think across the academic spectrum without restriction to one or two areas of study. In short, liberal arts education is to free the mind to think freely, broadly, and comprehensively instead of being shackled by a narrow perspective.
So here’s the irony: in the pursuit of an education that is designed to free the mind, it often comes at the cost of enslavement to a different master, a financial lender. Proverbs 22:7 brings this to light as it states that the borrower is slave to the lender. So while the Bible points out that seeking to learn godly wisdom and knowledge is well worth one’s monetary investment (Prov 16:16), it does not advocate a state of debt and bad stewardship in order to do so. We are forced to ask, is liberal arts education really liberating, or is it simply shifting servitude to another master? Having freed the mind to think, have we been shackled to a new set of chains?
While the exchange rate from one slavery to another may be preferable, no slavery at all is the only real choice. The biblical solution is this: an education that fosters the discipline and instruction in godly wisdom and knowledge that is pursued at the cost of a well-calculated investment. This cost is worth the investment but does not allow enslavement to a financial lender or neglect proper stewardship to our Heavenly Father, who has assigned us a portion of His resources for which to be accountable.
Sovereignty College takes seriously these biblical principles of financial stewardship and the pursuit of renewing the mind in the image of Christ. We offer a God-honoring and Christ-centered education at a cost-effective and debt-free tuition as a matter of godly conviction.
The Kingdom of God must expand and be built, but when the Kingdom’s builders are shackled with debt, their respective workforce will be limited and hampered. Let us all commit ourselves to gaining the knowledge and understanding of the Lord at a fraction of the cost that most universities charge. If our next generations can live debt-free their Kingdom-building efforts will be more fruitful, and let the shackles of debt for the unbelieving peers hinder their efforts in building the City of Man. As Voddie Baucham has poignantly quipped, “We’ve got to stop making the pagans rich while they make us dumb.”
